The first men’s tennis match that I remember seeing on television was a Madrid Open match played between Marat Safin and Feliciano Lopez in 2004, which Safin won in three sets. I did not support him in that match (I don’t know why) and I also did not support him once when he played Aisam ul Haq during a round of 16 match at Wimbledon in 2007 (because I used to be patriotic). Other than that, I do not remember a single moment that I have not supported him. It was a childhood dream come true seeing my second all-time favourite athlete (maybe even person hahah) play in an exhibition match today right in front of my eyes.
The magnificent double-handed backhand… the mercuriality… the laughs and the outbursts. I have so dearly missed them all. I was mad at him for retiring when he was only 29. But ah, well!
Here’s how our conversation went down:
Me (while holding out my hand for a handshake): How are you, Mr. Safin? It is so good to see you!
Safin (while shaking my hand): Good! Good… but cold. So cold!
Me: I always dreamt of seeing you play live but you retired so early!
Jibek: Come back! Come back!
Safin: No, no. Maybe in another life time.. hahah
