Birthday Eve drinks and focused on a couple of wines from Beechworth. First up was this 2014 là bas Chardonnay from @goldenballvineyard.
Plenty of accolades received for this wine, no bigger than the massive 98 points from James Halliday, making this the joint top rated Chardy in Australia. High expectations. Nice light straw yellow, pretty looking drop. Nose is floral, delicate stone fruit, nutty, vanilla brûlée. Palate has plenty of texture, lemon curd smoothness, zip and cling, the balance of stone fruit and acid is lovely, but for me the 35% new oak barriques for an extended period barges in and takes control, to the extent it wants to be the star, rather than plush and integrated, dominating the finish. Nice if that more buttery style is your thing, but I guess this is why Chardy can polarise. Still, nice to have the experience of trying and for me, back to the leaner style of Chardonnay in the near future, and maybe another one of these a few years down the track to see if any chance that oak has been tamed. Cheers!
