The House of the Seven Gables
by Nathaniel Hawthorne
The House of the Seven Gavle; the house with a long history. This house or we shall call it a mansion belongs to Pyncheon family. Colonel Pyncheon coveted the house from Matthew Maule, the local farmer who originally built the house. Well there is a saying that Matthew Maule was accused by Colonel Pyncheon with witchcraft and he was hanged. Another saying was that Matthew Maule cursed Pyncheons family forever. And the worst; some said the curse persists in plaguing the old house and its inhabitants.
Now there is an old lady living in the palace; Hepzibah Pyncheon. One day her niece arrives at home and she notices the cheer in the house so she asks her to stay for another couple of weeks. They notice that despite the darkness of this old mansion, Phoebe handles to lessen it and the joys is seen everywhere. And then Clifford, Hepzibah’s brother arrives as well and his mental health gets much better while being around Phoebe.
And then Phoebe goes back home.
We notice the darkness that is shadowed by the curse and controlling the house and people who are living in this house seems powerless to help themselves. There is also extra portion of elements are seen in all characters. For example Phoebe was too sweet, Clifford was too funny, Hepzibah was too amused and Holgrave was too dry but I guess together all of them make the story; fatty.
The story is set during the time of Salem witchcraft, were lots of people were accused of practicing sorcery and were hanged. Our author also was born and raised in the same place so I guess he took the help from his around. Actually he is one of descendant of Judge Hathorne; one of the characters in the book. Judge Hathorne was also one of the judges among others in the witch trials in Salem.
I appreciate the effort of the author for writing the story of The House of the Seven Gables to relay us the true story of his ancestors which was part of a great history as well. Real stories always have a special part and respect in my heart.
