Master mezcalero Moisés Calzada Rendón presents this exceptional small batch mezcal limited to only 36 bottles and distilled from the rare agave Cupreata from the state of Guerrero. Also known as maguey Papalote ("butterfly") and maguey Bravo ("mad maguey"), this agave, considered the mother of the agave Tobalá, is known for its rich aromas and complex, savory flavors with layers of fruit, spice and earth.
"The "Vino de Mezcal" series is a project of Fundación Agaves Silvestres (a non-profit organization dedicated to the reforestation of wild agaves in México) to promote traditional agave distillates and mezcales of México. Proceeds from this series are used to help conserve the traditional production methods as well as aid in environmental issues and maintain the biodiversity of the distillate-producing regions of México. With the increased popularity of mezcales and other agave distillates worldwide, the demand for wild agaves is outpacing their natural ability to reproduce. .
Fundación Agaves Silvestres funds its reforestation projects through donations as well as through the sale of small-batch agave spirits from around Mexico. We sell agave spirits made by mezcaleros using renewable methods in their production. This line of mezcales is called "Vino de Mezcal", the original name given by Spanish colonists to agave distillates. The Vino de Mezcal Series #1
from 2012 hit the scene in US in late 2013. Our Vino de Mezcal Series #2
was available in Aug/Sep 2014. [The 2016 VDM Series 3 No. 18-23 are now also avalable] "
