✅Lat Pulldown: benefits & right vs. wrong❌ . 🏁There is ample amount of evidence that supports the effectiveness of the lat pulldown in increasing size and strength of the back and arm muscles. There are many ways to go about using the machine; you can use a close-grip, wide grip, reverse-grip, and neutral grip (amongst other variations). . I’ve used the lat pulldown as a staple exercise in my back routine since I began working out, and I highly recommend it. The issue with this exercise (like most), is that there are many moving parts and without being informed, form can get sloppy real quick. Read below to learn the rights and wrongs of this movement. . 1️⃣✅Adjust the lat pulldown pads so that your knees are secure underneath when when you’re performing the movement. . 2️⃣✅Grasp the bar with your hands. Depending on your goals, you could vary your width from shoulder width to wider than shoulder width, and vary your grip from reverse to overhand or neutral. I encourage you to use all three to maintain variety, but primarily use a wider grip when aiming to target the lat, reverse your grip and keep it shoulder width if you’re aiming to target more of the biceps (this still targets the back), and use a neutral grip to target again, the biceps and back. . 3️⃣✅Suck your stomach in (aka, ‘brace your core’), to offer great spinal stability.4️⃣✅Lean your torso back 20 to 30 degrees (proven to be more optimal than sitting vertically), keep the spine in a neutral position (❌no arching❌), and pull down until you feel a stretch in your chest and a contraction of your back muscles (usually this means touching the bar to your chest). Be sure to THINK about squeezing your shoulder blades together throughout the movement. . ❌Avoid swinging the torso or using your shoulders to perform the movement. ✅By pulling your shoulders downwards (retracting them:(not hunched up into your ears)) BEFORE you pull down, and THEN pulling downwards, you can target the lat more and avoid having the traps and shoulder muscles take over. . Hit back day with two cuzzos. First time deadlifting heavy in with no pain in months. I guess taking a few weeks off from deadlifting was just what I needed. Started out today on some heavy #rackpulls Was able to get to 435x3 at the end of it. Very happy with this as 405x1 was my best. Also tried to get a swim in but was kicked out 5 laps in.
