Confession: I’ve never been a “seasonal reader”. Meaning, I don’t necessarily set out to look for a book that will put me in a Christmassy mood, or scare the pants off of me on Halloween, for that matter. But if I had to pick a book that reminds me of Christmas (even though it’s not really a book with a holiday theme), I would pick this one by Gabrielle Zevin.
It’s the relationship that the bookshop owner (titular character) and the little girl that reminds me of the spirit of the holiday season.
Fikry’s business is struggling. On top of that, his collection of original Poe poems was recently stolen. One day, an unexpected package arrived at his store. This package will be his chance to set his life on a different course; to see the world in a different light. What was once an ornery, difficult man slowly changes for the better.
Heartfelt, funny, and sweet. The Storied Life of AJ Fikry reminds us that life and circumstance will always be a malleable thing. It’s up to us to hang on to the familiar we’ve always known, or let go and let live. 📚📚💕💕🤓
