When mud flows and flooding hit villages on both sides of the Afghanistan and Tajikistan border back in July, locals were prepared. Fortunately, the EU had been funding community based disaster preparedness programmes in the area for several years. Aware from the training that high temperatures and heavy rainfall combined could cause mud flows, community volunteers were on full alert, and when the debris flow eventually happened, they evacuated the families whose houses were at risk of flooding within minutes. Those who were displaced immediately received tents and essential household items which had been stockpiled in the village for such a situation since 2012. A recently created Search and Rescue team also funded by the EU as part of project run by our partner, Focus Humanitarian Assistance, was also immediately deployed to provide vital support to the government relief and assessment efforts. The European Commission has been funding life-saving disaster risk initiatives in Tajikistan for over a decade.
