In the first edition of Coaches Corner we are going to review an exercise that I learned from Dr. Yessis and Yosef Johnson, the paw back. I chose this exercise because Dr. Heidersheit discussed that most hamstring injuries occur right before plant phase in running in episode 31 of The Podcast. We then started talking about this exercise as a good injury prevention (f that really exists) exercise. ✳️Metabolic transporters are an important thing to understand! ~~~~ ⏰When we consume carbohydrates they are broken down to glucose. When this happens, our pancreas secretes insulin which travels to the cells of our body and tells them to activate GLUT transporters, which are responsible for taking glucose into the cell. Ketones use a different transporter to get in the cell known as MCT. It is important to understand that it takes time for these transporters to become activated which is why when you first start keto, you may find yourself with a high blood ketone reading but you do not feel very good. Just give it more time, your body is trying to adapt! ~ Your guide for everything Keto! When one person's strength is another's weakness - pair them up and let them learn from each other. This doesn't always need to be technical things either. If one athlete doesn't think pair them with someone who over thinks. A little rant for today: I saw this a lot in commercial gyms, especially when I worked at 24 Hour Fitness and I still see it from time to time on some of my friend's instagram stories and pages. Bench pressing with feet up in the air or feet on the bench. It’s a horrible idea, and I’ll explain my reasons. _________________ Bench pressing is considered to be one of the essential lifts in the weight room and a staple in a lot of programs. The most common goal for bench presses is to lift a heavy amount - whether it be for aesthetics or performance. If the goal is to lift heavy, having your feet up creates trunk instability that is essential for lifting a heavy load over your chest. Two things can happen, either your lose your balance and fall off the bench, or lose balance and somehow injure someone else in the weight room. _________________ The counter argument would be that you'd want to engage and work on your core at the same time while bench pressing so you work on core stability. While you do want to engage your core while performing this exercise, the question becomes, "what's the goal?" If it’s to work the core, then I think that there are a plethora of exercises to choose from. Work in a superset of bench press and a core exercise to create that stability for the core. _________________ Another argument for it is that you want to create a neutral spine; the hyper-extension or arch of the low back can injure you. The low back's natural position is slightly arched. Trying to keep a completely neutral spine actually anteriorly tits your shoulders. This causes a bad angle for your shoulders to press from and can create long-term shoulder issues such as AC joint impingement. _________________ What’s my point in all this? Bench press with your feet on the floor! You can see in the video as I lower my feet from the air, to the bench, and to the floor, I become more stable in my torso as I press. Pressing with your feet on the floor also creates a counter force for your press so you’ll be able to push more weight. Completely safe for your back and shoulders to have that arch in your low back and feet on the floor!
Using eccentrics (the lowering portion of a lift) performed slowly is a mobility technique that can be used for any muscle or joint. By performing slow eccentrics with a light-moderately loaded dowel, you can help reinforce good habits that will lead to an improvement in shoulder flexion, thoracic extension and external rotation. ____________ In doing so that will result in better positioning for overhead lifts and just an improvement in overhead mobility in general leading to healthy shoulders. __________ Performing on the bench allows for an individual who has decent overhead to get a little bit more range of motion compared to just being on the ground. While on the bench the individual needs to have good body awareness to prevent any compensations that will lead to injury.
Leanne @lukilee10 is probably one of my most committed and hardest training 💪🏽 clients and has been with me for just over 3 years now! ➖➖➖ She's recently taken up Olympic 🏋🏽‍♀️ lifting, more specifically the cleans to increase her strength, power, cns development and simple ability to perform a more complex skill/ movement. ➖➖➖ 6 weeks in and never have done Olympic cleans before, she's progressing very nicely!! I'm lucky to have learnt a few tricks from the best in the business at @triumphweightliftingclub 👌🏽Well done Leanne!! ➖➖➖ For strength + performance coaching DM or email us today via the link in our bio. #360sp #olympiclifting #cleans #reachingforgreatness
