Giraffe Woman, 2015 The women of the Kayan tribe (a sub-group of the Karenni tribe) are famous for wearing rings around their necks giving them the appearance of an elongated neck. The reason for this is unclear but theories have ranged from making them unattractive to slavers, protecting them from tiger attacks, resembling a dragon, or simply a sign of cultural identity or beauty. Girls start as young as 5 to place the brass coils around the neck and only take them off to add new or longer coils. The rings do not lengthen the neck but push down on the clavicle and compact the rib cage. Kayan women are starting to do away with this tradition slowly and soon it will be a thing of the past. #myanmar #myan #burma #burmese #kayan #woman #tribe #tribal #explorer #explore #travelgram #traveller #traveling #igphoto #igcolor #igtravel #ig_photooftheday #iamatraveler #natgeo #natgeotravel #natgeoyourshot #asia #asian #seasia #kayan #adventure #adventurethatislife

I am, and always have been, an animal-lover. It only made sense that as an animal-lover, I wanted to get close to some of my favorite animals. I've done it all: I rode and elephant, I swam with trained dolphins and bottle fed lion cubs. I did these things because I love animals, what I didn't know is that by taking part in these activities I was harming these beauties. Check out my post [link in bio] about the ethics of animal tourism. #travelethically #elephant
