[213/365] Creep 2 (2017)
The original Creep was an exercise in discomfort, a film that deserves to be considered one of the best horror movies of the past decade simply for its ability to inspire terror through prolonged dialogue and play with an overwhelming feeling that something is not right. The sequel has extremely big shoes to fill, and to some extent, fills them very well, however it can’t get past its biggest downfall, which to no fault of its own, is that we’ve already seen this trick before. An amateur documentarian and aspiring YouTube celebrity responds to a personal ad, finding herself documenting a strange man who alleges to be a “serial killer who has lost his passion for his work”, but she is quickly pulled between her interest and the possibility that this man may be telling the truth. Mark Duplass once again gives an Oscar worthy performance as the aforementioned killer, and is able to tap dance on the line between charming, quirky, and creepy to amazing result solely through extended monologue. Our interviewer this time is much more dynamic and less of a blank canvas as opposed to last time and does a great job engaging the audience. Creep 2 is a great follow up to a fantastic movie that does every possible thing right, the only real detractor is that it simply can’t match the first time the formula terrified us.
