I watched Oz last fall and I've got to say, I believe it's easily one of the most hard hitting, devastating tv shows ever put to air. Oz is often cited as setting the bar for what's now known as the "HBO drama". These are shows with an unrelenting barrage of violence, nudity and language, i.e. The Sopranos, Deadwood, Game of Thrones. This shit premiered in '97 and pulled no punches, containing many and I mean MANY scenes of prison rape and brutal violence...some really ballsy stuff for HBO at the time. It was also boldly original, with its ensemble of nuanced characters and plot devices. There are 6 seasons, the first one being my personal favorite but they're all really solid. It's a daring, grim and often heartbreaking odyssey into the prison drama. I don't really see it talked a lot on here so do yourself a favor and check it out.
