Here’s a great post/video via @coachglue #educateyourself #getsometraining
- First let me start by saying that I'm absolutely loving the uptick in weapons and tactics training by responsible gun owners in the AA community. It really is a dream come true for me. With that said, there are some things we need to address before we go any further. Today, it will be the use of cover. The vast majority of the videos I've seen from said community show a misuse of cover, at best. Even those posted by some "instructors". The difference between cover and concealment is the protection that it offers you, but the technique of shooting from either is basically the same.
The first thing one should do is to actually GET BEHIND IT!! 🙄 Sounds silly to most of us that know, but the number of times I've seen people shooting NEXT to "cover" is mind boggling. 🤔 Another simple rule of thumb is that the closer you are to your cover, the more of yourself you'll have to expose to shoot from it. Simply put, don't "crowd your cover." In addition to that, shooting with your right hand when shooting from the right side of cover, and vise versa, helps to minimize your exposure. Lastly, and this is the one I see the most, when using a barrel or something of similar size as cover, the idea is to make yourself as SMALL AS POSSIBLE and to get behind it. Engage the threat from either side of the barrel, always presenting the weapon first, instead of FULLY EXPOSING your upper torso and head while using the top of the barrel as a shooting rest. 🤔 Think people!! Reloads, transitions, clearing of malfunctions,..etc, should all take place BEHIND cover.
There are a few more technical things to learn about shooting from cover, but those are the basics and also the main offenses that I see regularly.
I'll go as far as to say this... If your instructor has you shooting from what they describe as "cover" and has never specifically addressed how to, and/or spoke to at least SOME of the points I made above, find a new instructor...and then invite your former one with you to their class so they can learn too. 😏 #eachoneteachone #itstimetostepitup
