//Happy Rath Yatra// . When the resident deity of your place takes His annual vacation πŸ™ . Lord Jagannath and the temple in Puri play a huge part in the daily lives of most odia families - it is a way of life. Odia culture, food, rituals all draw inspiration from the temple. . Rath Yatra is the annual festival when Lord Jagannath along with elder brother, Balabhadra and younger sister, Subhadra, takes a trip to His aunt's place. This festival sees the lords idols being pulled in wooden chariots (Rath) by millions of devotees. This 'vacation' is for 10 days. . You see travel is in our genesis. When our uber cool Lord acts as a role model and tells us to travel amidst all other commitments, you just comply !! . The Ladakh Series! . The vast expanse of Leh is interspersed with linear thickets of poplar trees in the valley plains. What an absolute divine harmony to watch the Ladakhi people lead their daily lives around little patches of green which they cultivate themselves, amidst the many gompas on the mighty mountains! Imagine if the whole mankind could take a leaf out (no pun intended 😌) of their example. . . This panorama of Leh town was taken atop the serene Shanti Stupa and the monastery visible far away on the hills is the Sankar Gompa πŸ˜‡ . . . . . #leh #ladakh #colorfulplaces #nature #bluesky #cloudsofinstagram #greenvalley #earthcapture #wildernessculture #discoverglobe #nakedplanet #PGDaily @lonelyplanetmags #tripoto #himalayan_firefly #devilonwheels #nomadsofindia #kmhoe #indiatravelgram #_Hoi #indiaclicks #indiahikes #_woi #mountainbikelife #biketrails #roadtrip #ig_landscape #writersofinstagram
The Ladakh Series! . Arguably one of the largest monasteries in Ladakh, Thiksey monastery takes after the largest monastery in the world - Potala palace (in Lhasa, Tibet) former official home of the 14th Dalai Lama. A twelve storeyed complex with multiple rooms and halls showcasing various items of Buddhist art, yet the prime subject of interest is the Maitreya Buddha. A spell-binding two-storeyed tall structure, it is one of the most captivating Buddha statues that I have seen so far. Primarily because of the details and the exorbitant use of bright colors and an unusual lotus seating position, it is a treat to the eyes. Undoubtedly, a MUST visit! . Next up is a beautiful panorama of the Leh town 😊 . . #leh #ladakh #thikseymonastery #discoverglobe #colourfulplaces #indiaig #maitreyabuddha #buddhism #lotusbuddha #PGDaily @lonelyplanetmags #tripoto #himalayan_firefly #devilonwheels #nomadsofindia #kmhoe #indiatravelgram #_Hoi #indiaclicks #indiahikes #_woi #mountainbikelife #biketrails #roadtrip #ig_landscape #writersofinstagram
The Ladakh Series! . The next morning we set out to explore Leh and its surroundings. Among the many sobriquets such as 'land of high passes', 'the land of mystic lamas', 'broken moonland', 'the last shangri-la', 'little tibet', Ladakh is also known as 'the land of Gompas'. Gompas are buddhist temples, majorly located in Tibet, India (Ladakh), Nepal and Bhutan. So, it didn't come as a surprise as our day ahead panned around the various monasteries and stupas. . We started with the most far flung monastery (Hemis, about 40 odd kms from Leh). Although, Lamayuru monastery claims to be the oldest monastery in Ladakh, Hemis monastery comes very close as a competitor dating to as back as circa 11th century. The temple complex has a huge courtyard partially enclosed by walls with old buddhist paintings, the main room and a museum, which stores and carefully preserves the artefacts from the early medieval age India. Since, photography is strictly prohibited, I don't have any pictures to share. Inside, we were greeted with stoles called 'khata' in Tibetan. Typically, made of silk and white in color, they symbolise the purity of the giver. . Next up, is one of the most ornate Buddhas in Leh. So stay tuned to the Ladakh Series! . Apologies to my beloved readers, for not being around lately. The Ladakh Series! . The first day in Leh we were joined by two more friends who had flown in to Leh from Mumbai via Delhi, making us a 'squad of six' (think on the lines of fabulous five 😊) Having reached earlier, they checked in at the resort in the morning and seemed all chirpy and alive with that infectious vacation energy (they too had spent majority of the day acclimatising). We (the four of us) on the other side felt very content. To be honest, we were still in awe of the journey that we mapped on the road to reach Leh. Such overwhelming views and an indescribable experience! . On reaching the resort, we were welcomed to an evening tea amidst the poplar grove on the porch of our suite. Lha-ri-sa resort, a true blue boutique property is the fruit of labour and love of a Ladakhi family who wants to showcase the real beauty that Ladakh is, through the eco-sensitive and culturally influenced ways of the locals, to outsiders like us. . The architecture draws heavily from the rain-free environment and so is typically flat-roofed with a color scheme very close to what we see in a buddhist monastery (a kind of religion derivative). Ornate use of wood, which is practical in these climatic conditions, acts as a good insulator besides rendering a regal look to the entire property. Noteworthy mention to the many murals in vivid reds and other bright colors that give more than a peek to the heritage of the precious Ladakhi culture. Adding to this mix, are the many patches of organic farming that the spacious resort indulges in and lets the visitors savour them too in the cuisine served in their restaurant. They grow all kinds of vegetables such as cabbages, cauliflowers, tomatoes et al alongside the apple, walnut and almond trees. One could also enjoy the natural fauna around these in the form of many exotic birds and smaller-winged beauties i.e, butterflies; flutters that create enough ripples in your heart to last a lifetime. . . #leh #ladakh #colorfulplaces #boutiqueresort #tripoto #himalayan_firefly #devilonwheels #nomadsofindia #indiatravelgram #indiaclicks #biketrails #roadtrip #ig_landscape
The Ladakh Series! . From the top of Tanglang la, it was a steady downhill journey for the next 2.5 hours till we reached Leh. The last leg of the journey being extremely arduous due to the constant scaling of the high altitudes and the lack of oxygen thereof, had made us all extremely tired. So we decided to rest and rejuvenate ourselves before heading any further. Our first pit stop in the entire day happened around 2:30 pm, when we spotted the first signs of greenery. It sure felt like eons before, when we had breathed in air to our lungs fill. Can you imagine being all excited and ever thankful for the presence of trees? We were!! . After the refreshments, we started feeling a lot better and found back our lost energies and slowly the signs of civilisation started showing as we neared the many valleys leading up to the Leh valley. I lucidly remember the first sight of the striking yellow mustard fields on the small patches of green in the valley area against the barren mountains. It was like seeing magic. Why you ask? . Ladakh being a high altitude cold desert, with mountains on all sides, makes it fall under a rain shadow region. With no apparent water source like a river or a waterbody, I wondered how the Ladakhis managed to grow their crops. Well the answer to that lies in their ingenuous yet sustainable farming practice of channelling the water from the melting snow of the mountains. Brilliant right? They could be pretty self-sufficient too, had the weather allowed them beyond the short farming season of four months. . And so we finally reached Leh, early evening, all starry eyed! The rest of the day was spent acclimatising and sipping hot liquids over loads of banters and memories from the road. . . #leh #ladakh #colorfulplaces #greenvalley #mustardfields #sustainableagriculture #earthcapture #wildernessculture #discoverglobe #nakedplanet #tripoto #himalayan_firefly #devilonwheels #nomadsofindia #kmhoe #indiatravelgram #_Hoi #indiaclicks #indiahikes #_woi #mountainbikelife #biketrails #roadtrip #ig_landscape
The Ladakh Series! . After the exhilarating ride on the Moore Plains, came the extremely difficult ride. The incline was extremely sharp and heavy snowing a few days back had rendered the path difficult. The steepness of the climb, the narrowness of the roads and the imposing mountains are a challenge to any rider. My husband (on the bike in the previous picture), deemed it as the most difficult stretch of the entire ride (remember he was fine in Sarchu !) . We were on top of the highest pass on the Manali-Leh highway - Tanglang la(5328 m). The vistas here were exhilariting to the extent that we forgot all the labour involved in reaching here. Even with all this beauty, what caught and held my attention was this sign post! Not that the road had not occupied a pithy chunk of the mindspace throughout this stellar journey, but the feeling hit me with full force while staring up at this plaque put up by the Indian Border Road Organisation (BRO Himank)- a unit of the Indian army tasked with constructing and maintaining roads in the border areas. Working under the Ministry of Defence, they are not only responsible for keeping the transport lines open in the Ladakh region but also ensure access in the sensitive military areas including the world’s highest battlefield – Siachen (Indo-Pak border) and at Pangong Tso (that spans the Indo-China border). . When they say that travel makes a humble person out of you; well this was my humbling moment. Simply dazed with the bravado these guys showcase in the face of such inhumane terrain. While a lot of us mainlanders have the luxury of living in cozy homes and relatively much safer work environments, these guys battle it out every day even if it is not an actual battle field, to save our border areas from turning into battlefields. . And my my, do these guys have an awfully good sense of humour. The road is speckled with funny quotes on their markerstones. . . #leh #ladakh #colorfulplaces #cloudsofinstagram #earthcapture #wildernessculture #discoverglobe #himalayan_firefly #indiaclicks #indiahikes #mountainbikelife #biketrails #roadtrip #ig_landscape #writersofinstagram
The Ladakh Series! . Have you ever wanted to paint on a huge canvas with free hand brush strokes? Well, that is what the Creator must have felt like while bringing Ladakh to life! . And when you are in such a place, it is easy to lose track of your destination. The journey itself is no less. You lose track of time and it feels like you've entered a trance. A vast expanse of plain nothingness with not a single soul to come by, a straight road which looks like its the gateway to heaven, and flirtatious mountains playing hide and seek with equally playful clouds - thats Moore plains for you!Β  Ask about their experience to any rider who rode on this epic tarmac and you wouldn't be surprised by their answer. For it is the most surreal part of the journey on the Manali-Leh highway. . Gliding on that ~40 km stretch of smooth plateau, is in fact a riders dream. You know when they say how travel changes you; its in moments like these when the rear view mirror puts you into that reflective state as to where we are in the schematic master plan. How abysmal are our worries in front of natures might? How often do we get caught up in the insignificant details than give happiness a chance? How we forget to prioritize - people and love over material possessions? . . . #leh #ladakh #colorfulplaces #mooreplains #grasslands #cloudsofinstagram #earthcapture #wildernessculture #discoverglobe #nakedplanet #adventuremotorcycle #motoadventure #motorcyclediaries #himalayan_firefly #devilonwheels #nomadsofindia #kmhoe #indiatravelgram #_Hoi #indiaclicks #indiahikes #_woi #mountainbikelife #biketrails #roadtrip #ig_landscape #theshootingstar
The Ladakh Series! . Flanked by tall mountain ranges on all sides, passes are simply magnificent to look at. Beyond the Top of Gata Loops (a series of 21 hair pin bends and a 23 km ascent) the gravel track took us toΒ the third highest pass on the Manali-Leh highway - Nakee la, at a dizzying height of 4739 m (in picture). . Further up from here, as the scaling continued, we reached the second highest pass of Lachulung la, crossing well over the 5000m mark. Although, still uneasy due to the intermittent headaches, yet the massive panoramas that stretched out in front of our eyes were enough to take our breath away (forgive the pun)! . The weather was quite fickle too that day, changing from a bright sunny clear sky to pleasantly overcast skies as soon as we came across the Moore plains, just after Pang. It was nothing like we had ever seen before. An inexplicable beauty awaits on the next post. . On a side note I wish all my readers a happy #EarthDay. May we all become conscious of the choices we make everyday - during travel or in our daily lives by reducing the negative impact those have on our planet. It could be a simple act of being aware and bringing awareness in our closed ones about very little yet significant things like not littering, not wasting water, reducing or limiting plastic usage etc. . Lets pledge to do our best in preserving this awesome yet very fragile planet that we call home. . . #leh #ladakh #colorfulplaces #nature #bluesky #earthday #highdesertlife #theshootingstar #wildernessculture #discoverglobe #nakedplanet #EarthDay2017 @lonelyplanetmags #tripoto #himalayan_firefly #devilonwheels #nomadsofindia #kmhoe #indiatravelgram #_Hoi #indiaclicks #indiahikes #_woi #mountainbikelife #biketrails #roadtrip #ig_landscape #writersofinstagram
The Ladakh Series! . So people travelling on the Manali-Leh highway have the option of staying over the second night at either Sarchu or Pang. Sarchu being placed strategically midway and on the border of Himachal Pradesh and J&K has far better options for accommodation. Plus it is at a lesser elevation (~600m) than Pang (4600m), so you can imagine what it would feel like to spend a night at Pang. . Day 3 we literally ran away from Sarchu at the break of dawn. A) We had a lot of ground to cover (260 km in a single day) and B) We simply could not bear the atrocities of the AMS that Sarchu gave us. As much as we would have wanted to rest, the best option for us was to keep moving and reach Leh (3500m), a considerably lesser elevation asap. . Making the matters worse - the road from Sarchu to Pang was not in a very good condition and was rarely made up of gravel; so it was quite dusty. With no signs of greenery and barren lands as far as the eye could see, it came upon us as a revelation as to what would become of our planet one day, if we continue taking it for granted. Scary right? Nausea, light-headedness with a massive headache, you name it, we had it all, yet we still could not roll down the windows of our car for the fear of aggravating it even further plus there was the added element of dust in the air. With no apparent respite in sight, we just went on and on with three of the highest passes in the world still up ahead on the road. . Follow along to know how we survived this journey! . . . #leh #ladakh #colorfulplaces #rockymountains #gorge #cloudsofinstagram #highdesertlife #earthcapture #wildernessculture #discoverglobe #nakedplanet #PGDaily @lonelyplanetmags #tripoto #himalayan_firefly #devilonwheels #nomadsofindia #kmhoe #indiatravelgram #_Hoi #indiaclicks #indiahikes #_woi #mountainbikelife #biketrails #roadtrip #ig_landscape #writersofinstagram
The Ladakh Series! . Barely minutes after we reached our stay at Sarchu, one of our friends disappeared into the tents; she was the first one to fall prey to AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness): Nausea, heavy headedness and bouts of vomiting being its usual suspects. That was our first tryst with Sarchu. At a height of 4890 m with little or no vegetation and a very thin atmosphere it has rightfully earned the title of the vomit hilton. . Soon our other friend and I followed suit. I was in my tent chit chatting and feeling sorry for both of them, when it hit me- before I could even know, I too was puking. That's when it dawned on me, how bad AMS could get. One moment you are fine and the other you are literally gasping for air. . Fortunately, my husband was the only one, who despite having a headache and feeling nauseous, did not actually show any aggravated symptoms of AMS. So, he became the caretaker for the three of us - getting us all bowls of hot garlic soup and tending to us in turns. Garlic being a natural anti-histamine prevents blood coagulation and acts as a blood thinner which facilitates better oxygen carrying capacity for the RBCs; thereby improving blood circulation and relieving a person suffering from AMS. . But the situation went from bad to worse as the night advanced. Constant puking had made us completely loose our appetite (none of us had dinner). As the night temperature dipped to near zero levels, our tents kept rumbling with strong chilly winds. I had a lot of difficulty in breathing and struggled to catch even a few winks of sleep. It is said that AMS worsens off when a person sleeps, because as the BMR(Basal Metabolic Rate) goes down, so does the oxygen reaching the brain cells (as it is, the air is quite thin at such high altitudes). So, there I lay awake, freezing in the cold (despite the many blankets), with a bucket by the bed side (no strength to even get up) for what seemed like an eternity. Clearly, it was the longest and most painful night of my life. . AT 5 AM we got up and fled ! . . #leh #ladakh #sarchu #altitudesickness #colorfulplaces #wildernessculture #tripoto #himalayan_firefly #devilonwheels #roadtrip #ig_landscape
The Ladakh Series! . As we progressed our journey, we began to see the most amazing valleys and vistas. This was the day when we saw the maximum metamorphosis happening in terms of the landscape. The lush greenery of mountains and human settlements started to wean off gradually and once we crossed Jispa and Darcha valley (the northern most village of Himachal Pradesh on Manali-Leh route), we could barely see any locals. From there on, it was pretty much mostly other adventure riders like us and quite a number of trucks plying essentials to the Leh valley (this being the only time of the year when they can do so). Also, important to note: there are no fuel stations on this route, the last one being at Tandi and the next after 350 odd kms at Upshi just before Leh. So, one must have enough fuel to last this journey. . This was also the day we saw the most amazing glacial lakes - Deepak Tal and a little ahead from that Suraj Tal (also called Vishal Tal and origin of the Bhaga river) just below one of the most panoramic passes- Baralacha la (La means pass in Tibetan). We were strictly advised by our driver to not spend much time here as it is at a very high altitude of 4890m, lest we should fall sick due to AMS. It is highly recommended that first time travelers pay heed to the local drivers as they know the terrain and conditions in and out. . From here, it was a steady descent and a bumpy ride till we reached the Sarchu valley - 4290m (we were to do a night halt here). Sarchu derives its name from the river Tsarap chu that flows in this region. We spotted Marmots (large squirrels) for the first time here and were quite bemused by these rodents. From a distance on the long straight road we could glimpse a cluster of orange tents in the midst of nowhere. This was it! Unfortunately, we were in for a rude shock and so began the most dreadful night of my life! . . #leh #ladakh #colorfulplaces #baralachala #glaciallakes #currytraveler #earthcapture #wildernessculture #discoverglobe #nakedplanet #tripoto #himalayan_firefly #devilonwheels #nomadsofindia #kmhoe #indiatravelgram #_Hoi #indiaclicks #indiahikes #_woi #mountainbikelife #biketrails #roadtrip #ig_landscape
The Ladakh Series! . We had been warned enough about the nallas (small streams of water flowing on the roads) on the many blogs/articles we had read before the trip, but the practical experience was something we had to acquire ourselves, which no amount of reading can give. So, as mentioned earlier there were two vehicles on our humble entourage, one bullet and the other an Innova (which is technically not a 4WD btw!). Usually, the Innova trailed the bike for the entire journey till Leh. So, here we were facing our first significantly big nalla, which required decently good, if not excellent maneuvering skills. I happened to be inside the Innova which meant, I could see all the action right in front of my eyes without getting my feet dirty or wet 😌Two of our friends were on the bike ahead; the pillion of course had to get down and walk it up on a narrow and flimsy path made up of rocks, while the rider had to do some mental math in order to safely cross the nalla. . There were a quite a few vehicles coming from the other side too, so there was a small jam that we guys had created. Seeing us in a bit of trouble, there were few locals who came to help and guided us by giving precise instructions. Apparently, it is better to cross it at one smooth go at a moderate speed without stopping in between. We obviously followed the instructions to the tee, and the bike was through! Our Innova driver being a local, was fairly adept at crossing such rivulets. So for him, it was a piece of cake. πŸ˜‡ . I wish I had clicked a picture of the scene but was too caught up with the whole thing! So here, is a picture of one the streams melting from a glacier on the other side of the road. Stay glued, for there is more of the Ladakh Series coming up on Insta Stories too. 😁✌️ . . . #leh #ladakh #colorfulplaces #nature #bluesky #cloudsofinstagram #greenvalley #earthcapture #wildernessculture #discoverglobe #nakedplanet #PGDaily @lonelyplanetmags #tripoto #himalayan_firefly #devilonwheels #nomadsofindia #kmhoe #indiatravelgram #_Hoi #indiaclicks #indiahikes #_woi #mountainbikelife #biketrails #roadtrip #ig_landscape #writersofinstagram #himalayasarecalling
The Ladakh Series! . After a good night's rest we woke up to the chitter-patter of a couple of wild doves who had already began their morning, foraging for breakfast and were munching on insects and worms on the small patch of mustard greens by our tent. Taking a cue, we too got done with our morning rituals and sat down for a hearty breakfast, eating leisurely while soaking in all those scenic mountain views. . Soon we were on the road again. Crossing Keylong and Jispa we couldn't help but admire the witty sign posts and plaques put up by BRO( Border Road Organisation). The entire Leh-Manali road is maintained by them and they do their job brilliantly. In fact it is a matter of pride for us Indians. Braving the tough weather conditions and decrepit locations, BRO makes sure that the road is at its plyble best throughout the open season. The road status and its duration is declared by the Indian army each year depending on the weather as open or closed. . However, there are sketchy patches on this road (its bound to happen when a certain glacier decides to melt into a river on to the road, (yeah! you read that right). As expected, a lot of people were stuck on both sides of this mini river flowing with full force on the road. A lot of caution is advised when crossing these since, these spots are damn slippery due to the loose gravel of the road underneath the water plus the current of the water is deceptively strong. So, did we make it past this spot comfortably? Read more about it on the next post..😊 . . . #leh #ladakh #colorfulplaces #nature #bluesky #cloudsofinstagram #greenvalley #earthcapture #wildernessculture #discoverglobe #nakedplanet #PGDaily @lonelyplanetmags #tripoto #himalayan_firefly #devilonwheels #nomadsofindia #kmhoe #indiatravelgram #_Hoi #indiaclicks #indiahikes #_woi #mountainbikelife #biketrails #roadtrip #ig_landscape #writersofinstagram
The Ladakh series! . The first day on road from Manali we had to cover roughly 120 kms. We had an early call-time so that we could reach our first halt Tandi, a famous village near Keylong before sunset. Famous as it is the confluence of the two rivers flowing in that basin- Chandra (originates in Chandratal in Spiti valley) and Bhaga (originates in Suraj tal below the Bara-lacha-la pass). The two meet to form the river Chandrabhaga as it flows in Himachal Pradesh and as it enters J&K it gets re-christened to Chenab. . After a sumptumous breakfast of piping hot aloo parathas at a dhaba on the way by the Beas river on one side and high mountain cliffs on the other, we knew we had a great start to the day already. Soon, we were scaling heights steadily and came across dense green mountains with heavy fogs rolling down them. What a drive it was! But, reality caught us up quickly in the form of a traffic jam at the Marhi valley- a small pit stop for truck and bus drivers. But we did not mind it at all, since the scenery around was just mind-numbingly beautiful and gave us a lot of photo-ops! Within an hour or so from here, we were at the first pass- Rohtang la, which connects the Kullu valley with the Lahaul-Spiti valley. We stopped here for a quick tea and to admire the snow peaked mountains that were beginning to get closer and closer. . From there we had to descend steadily until we reached Gramphu village. Here, people going to Spiti valley take a right, while we continued on the left alongside the Chandra river(yes we were chasing the river!). We came across innumerable waterfalls, hair-pin bends coming down the valleys and felt like taking breaks every now and then. Somehow, despite all those breaks, we managed to reach our stay at Tandi, right at sundown. Oh! what a sight it was! We were staying exactly at the meeting point of the two rivers, as in it was right in front of the gorge outside our tent. And when we thought what more could we have asked for, the caretaker came with some delicious hot pakodas and chai! 😊 . . #leh #ladakh #cloudsofinstagram #greenvalley #earthcapture #wildernessculture #nakedplanet #devilonwheels #indiahikes #manalilehhighway
The Ladakh Series! . Now who doesnt love the view from heights. Greater the height, better the view. But here is the thing about heights - when going to mountains well above 3000 mts, majority of us are bound to experience AMS (actute mountain sickness). That dizzy feeling, shortness of breath, nausea all happens due to thinning of the air. The barometric pressure reduces at these high elevations and the volume of oxygen available per breath of air decreases drastically, due to which our body experiences discomfort (mild or strong, varies from person to person) and in order to cope with the changes in oxygen levels, we need to acclimatize our body. As a thumb rule, for every 300 meters gain in elevation, one needs to stay overnight for proper acclimatization. . Manali(2050 mts) is at a distance of 490kms from Leh(3500 mts). Sarchu(4290 mts) is a (in)famous halt point on the Manali-Leh highway as it is approximately at the mid point of the entire journey (230 kms from Manali and 260 kms from Leh). It has been apltly named as Vomit Hilton by the travelers as this is the place that makes you feel the most sick for the obvious reasons. It is so scary that people almost cover the entire stretch of Manali to Leh in just 2 days in the ratio of (25:75), so that they dont have to stay over at this place. But, we knew even that was not an easy proposition. So we decided to equitably distribute the journey over 3 days. Plus that way we could also acclimatize ourselves well. Or so we thought..? More on that on the next posts! So follow along..😊 . . . #leh #ladakh #colorfulplaces #nature #bluesky #cloudsofinstagram #greenvalley #earthcapture #wildernessculture #discoverglobe #nakedplanet #PGDaily @lonelyplanetmags #tripoto #himalayan_firefly #devilonwheels #nomadsofindia #kmhoe #indiatravelgram #_Hoi #indiaclicks #indiahikes #_woi #mountainbikelife #biketrails #roadtrip #ig_landscape #writersofinstagram #sourcedadventures
The Ladakh Series! . Having set our eyes on the destination-Ladakh..then came the going part. One can reach Ladakh in many ways. There are direct flights from Delhi (which need to be booked early as they tend to get costly). NH1 goes from Srinagar all the way to Leh and is a well maintained highway for the most parts, although it does pass through some of the treacherous high mountain passes ( for example Zojila pass) and Manali to Leh highway is open for around 4.5 months between June-October depending on the weather. For the thrill seekers who want to see nature at its rawest, the best way to reach Leh is to take the arduous, yet dripping with scenery, Manali to Leh roadtrip. So you see, for us this route was the obvious option! . Let me make it very clear at this very outset, Ladakh is not your average run of the mill vacation and is not everybody's cup of tea. Definitely not for the faint-hearted; it is for those who seek an outright adventure and is best enjoyed in the company of like-minded dare devils. We were a lucky bunch of 6 friends who were willing to throw caution to the winds(literally). Armed with a thunderbird, extra fuel, a chauffeur driven Innova with a bike mechanic and oxygen cans (for just in case scenarios), we set off from Manali early morning, having reached there the previous night from Delhi. We decided to cover the distance from Manali to Leh which is approx 490 kms over 3 days with two night halts at Tandi(near Keylong) and Sarchu. Why across 3 days? More on that in the next post. Have you ever been able to pin point the exact time when you were bitten by the travel bug?Β  The moment that took your breath away or rather leased a new life into your body and you just knew that it is going to be the greatest love affair you will ever have. The stories you would have to tell when you ventured into your lover’s arms. The excitement of finding new things or just falling over the same, seeing them in a different light each time. The way they make you feel in their embrace. I could just go on and on! . For me, the fernweh started with my trip to Ladakh. A road trip of legendary proprotions! The ~490km trip from Manali to Leh, traversing homegrown highland passes and few of the highest motorable roads in the world, is considered one of the toughest road trips in India (& world), given the high altitude, unpredictable weather and fair distance from even the basic of amenities. The extensive research (that did hold us in good stead most of the time), made us feel as if we knew. But, boy oh boy! could we have been more wrong. For, we were in to witness beauty that we never knew existed. Every bend on the road showed us a new hue, a new terrain, with nature at its flamboyant best! Not knowing when to stop going crazy with the shutterbugs, we were often just overwhelmed with love. . Starting a series on this first love - Ladakh. Imagine huge stacks of money – millions, billions, zillions and even gazillions and compress them into an area of about 2 square kms. Now replace them with luxury super cars, yachts, homes of the who’s who of the world, casinos that see moneybags πŸ’°πŸ’°πŸ’° of the uber rich changing hands in a matter of seconds and you’ve β€˜reached’ Monaco. Not sure if I can say you’ve β€˜arrived’, because you see one in three out of the 40k odd population is a millionaire. . Monaco is a rich people magnet like no other. With zero personal tax and exceptionally low taxes of other kinds, people with the maximum moolah in the world get to have not just a piece of cake but the whole cake to themselves and eat it too *in style*! The 300 days balmy Mediterranean weather being the icing on the cake πŸ˜πŸŽ‚. So, it goes without saying that Monaco has maintained top spot in the list of property values and it is no mean feat to have an address up there. . This picture was taken in the Fontvielle ward of Monaco (In total Monaco has 10 wards including the famous Monte Carlo), as we began our trek up on the Rock of Monaco. We stayed at the nearby Cote-d-Azure Nice and took an autobus to reach here. And covered the entire area on foot. Must say it felt really exhilarating to explore an entire country in about half a days- time, just walking. So what, if it is the second smallest country in the world? πŸ˜‰ . . #living_europe #iamatraveler #europe_vacations #hello_worldpics #bestcitybreaks #unfoldingroad #intravelist #travelregularly #ig_europe #cbviews #unfoldingroad #worldunion #citybestpics #wanderingzone #pocket_world #travelanddestinations #myatlas #doyaeven
