One of the things I love about photography, and art in general, is that it can be endless, borderless and playful. It becomes a way to live and see. Lines, light, shapes, contrast, nuances, textures and color (or not). Timing and rhythm. It's addictive and highly contagious! Once you get sucked in it's hard to get out... #fineart #fall #life #contagious #sweden #alexandrovklum #mattiasklum #funkyart #nikonambassador @natgeo @thephotosociety @natgeotravel @mattiasklumcollection @alexandrovklumofficial @irisalexandrov
I filmed this female polar bear and her cubs in front of the massive Nordenskiöldbreen in Svalbard, Norway. Summertime sun never really sets in Svalbard. However light is softer and even more gorgeous at night. I usually choose to work "night shift" also since the polar bears (and other species) tend to be more active during night hours. This adaptation is surely because both ringed seals and bearded seals are more active at night. But "day and night" does not mean that much in the Arctic where there are 24 hours of daylight in summer and 24 hours of darkness during the cold winter. The polar bear is a great ambassador for a resilient future where we care about our environment and our common future! #nikonambassador #protectbiodiversity #svalbard #polar #polarbears #arctic #savingthearctic #climatechange #expedition #mattiasklum #cubs #mom #predator @irisalexandrov @mattiasklumcollection @alexandrovklumofficial @thephotosociety @natgeo
Early morning at the glacial lake Jökulsárlón on the edge of Vatnajökull National Park. This lake quite recently became the largest on Iceland since glacial retreat extended its boundaries. I have many favourite places.. I took this picture of The Milky Way Galaxy from the Makgadikgadi Pan, a salt pan situated in the middle of the dry savanna of north-eastern Botswana. The Milky way is really our home galaxy in the universe. The centre of it, which is located about 26,000 light-years from Earth, contains at least one supermassive black hole. The Milky Way began forming around 12 billion years ago! Makgadikgadi Pan is one of the largest salt flats in the world. The pan is all that remains of the formerly enormous Lake Makgadikgadi, which once covered an area larger than Switzerland, but dried up several thousand years ago. To stay over night out in this arid wilderness listening to lions and brown hyenas in a distance is nothing but spectacular! Makgadikgadi And the Milky way, magnificent and extraordinary to watch every time!! I love the facial expression of this Asiatic lion male that I photographed in Gir Forest National Park, India. To me he looks like a dethroned king. It took me a year and a half to get a special permit to explore the entire Gir Forest—and really no time at all to see why these lions became symbols of royalty and greatness. Most people might think of lions as strictly African cats, but ten thousand years ago lions spanned vast sections of the globe, and so did obviously people, who—as we multiplied and got increasingly organized—put immense pressure on competitors at the top of the food chain. Now lions hold only a small fraction of their former habitat, and Asiatic lions, a genetically separate subspecies that split from African lions perhaps 100,000 years ago, hang on to an almost impossibly small slice of their former domain. India is the proud steward of these 400 or so lions, which live primarily in this 560-square-mile (1,450-square-kilometer) sanctuary in Gujarat. We must not forget to protect Asia's Last Lions and big cats everywhere! Please support WWF. A room with a view! Sometimes you have to travel far and work really hard to get a certain photograph. Sometimes it's right outside your window....Geese flitting by our bedroom outside Uppsala, Sweden does not require alot of work but to me nevertheless special! #love #alexandrovklum #mattiasklum #purpose #bedroom #sweden #uppsala #mist #geese @irisalexandrov @thephotosociety @alexandrovklumofficial @mattiasklumcollection @natgeo
After years of traveling extensively, getting to spend a little time at home with @irisalexandrov @ansgarklumphotos @naturebyeinar @biancalexandrov and little Dorian is a soothing blessing! Early mornings are now humid and cold. Meerkats enjoying last rays of sun. One of my most entertaining @natgeo assignments was to shoot the story on meerkats in the Kalahari, South Africa. Thank's to a team of dedicated scientists, a great camera assistant and a lot of hard work we managed to gradually habituate two groups of wild meerkats. Smart, cute and entrepreneureal = Great mammals! #meerkat #kalahari #conservation #scientist #southafrica #mattiasklum #protectbiodiversity #nikonambassador #instagood #nosy @natgeo @thephotosociety @irisalexandrov @alexandrovklumofficial @mattiasklumcollection
Here's a major throwback! Just realized that, 20 years ago this month, I got my first National Geographic cover. I had spent 14 months with my team in the rainforest of Borneo (1995-96). I still remember the phone call from @natgeo giving me the news. We had worked so hard as a team, I was 29 years old and it really meant the world to have my silvered leaf-monkey on the cover. Feel free to visit and follow our brand new instagram account for our artist duo: @alexandrovklumofficial and check out to learn more about how I got started and what we are up to these days. As my beloved partner @irisalexandrov and I are filming gorgeous water lilly patterns a sunny morning in Sweden I can admit that I'm not less curious or less determined to try to evoke emotions. After some major sneakin' up I got this Jameson's mamba a few inches away from my lens! In my opinion one of the planet's most beautiful snake species! Shot on assignment for @natgeo in Cameroon. The venom of the Jameson's mamba is lethal, but unlike some other venomous snakes that have specialized in just one kind of venom, the Jameson's mamba uses a cocktail of particularly nasty surprises. The Jameson's mamba blend is a toxic combination of hemotoxins, cardiotoxins, fasciculins as well as myotoxic substances. As I have mentioned before in my flow, it is the lethal characteristics of snake venom that ironically makes it so valuable. Scientists study the genetic and molecular set-up by collecting venom and DNA samples. This has led to the development of medicine against heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer's and this will not affect the wild populations since all snakes are released after sampling! #mamba #cameroon #protectbiodiversity #mattiasklum #conservation @natgeo @thephotosociety @mattiasklumcollection @irisalexandrov
Glowing in the dark! The Nyiragongo stratovolcano situated in the Virunga Mountains glows a clear night in Congo DR. This mountain range is home of the critically endangered mountain gorilla, listed on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species due to poaching, habitat loss, disease and war. I took this photograph while taking part in a mountain gorilla sensus project carried out by WWF and IGCP. Nyiragongo and nearby Nyamuragira are responsible for 40% of Africa's historical volcanic eruptions. #congo #congodr #virunga #rainforest #gorilla #mountain #volcano #endangered #iucn #wwf #igcp #protectbiodiversity @natgeo @thephotosociety @mattiasklumcollection @irisalexandrov
As a child I spent every summer in my parents summer house near Ludvika in Dalarna, Sweden. This is truly where my love for nature was born. A haven for a young budding photographer. Night among the birch trees is an old picture I took in the very beginning of my career some 30 years ago, just outside my childhood summer place. I am grateful to my parents Arne and Ingegärd for giving me a chance to grow up in a place surrounded by such beauty. #sweden #mattiasklum #protectbiodiversity #ludvika #beauty #dalarna #grateful #nikonambassador #throwbackpic #birch @natgeo @mattiasklumofficial @thephotosociety @irisalexandrov @mattiasklumcollection

The beautiful, icy world of the Antarctic Peninsula is changing. Antarctica is nearly twice as big as Australia, and in the winter its frozen ocean doubles in size. Already during the International Polar Year of 2010, it was conclusively shown that not only the Arctic but also Antarctica is losing ice mass, the Antarctic Peninsula being especially vulnerable. #antarctica #polar #savingantarctica #polaryear #stopclimatechange #expedition #mattiasklum #passion #art #fineart #ice #icebergs #UN #IQ #sdg2030 @mattiasklumcollection @natgeo @thephotosociety @irisalexandrov
Foul weather can be a challenge while working from a helicopter but is quite frequently a blessing aesthetically. These thunder clouds over southern Iceland saved my day. Photographing or filming venomous snakes such as this beautiful and highly venomous rhinoceros viper (30 centimeters or 12 inches away from me) in Ndoki, Republic of Congo, is always rewarding but sometimes quite challenging! The default position when working with species like this is to try to habituate the snake a bit by approaching it very carefully, and usually and more successfully, with the help from an assistant. As you can see in these short sequences I'm already close which means the getting-close-to-phase went well. Everything can be calm and peaceful until one thing goes wrong though so you always need to be focused and read what's in front of you ... As I have mentioned previously in my flow, it is the lethal characteristics of snake venom that ironically makes it so valuable and sought after for use in medicinal treatments. The toxic components of snake venom have for example both led to the development of medicine against heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer's and this will luckily not affect the wild populations at all! By protecting rainforest and other ecosystems as well as their inhabitants and by using natures wealth sustainably we secure a healthier planet and future for humanity! #rhinocerosviper #congo #ecosystemservices #venom #bestjobintheworld #conservation #science #death #snake #medicin #photooftheday #viper #rhino #snake #conservation #rainforest #respect #biodiversity #photooftheday #instagood #love #livingthedream #protectbiodiversity @mattiasklumcollection @natgeo @thephotosociety @irisalexandrov
I photographed this little "paradise stream" for @natgeo in the beautiful but threatened Mata Atlantica, south of Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. The Atlantic Forest still remains extraordinarily rich in biodiversity and endemic species. Unfortunately many are today threatened with extinction. Nearly 40 % of its "higher" plants and up to 60 % of its vertebrates are endemic species, meaning they are found only here and nowhere else in the world. More than 250 species of birds, mammals and amphibians have become extinct as a result of human activity in the past 400 years. Today more than 11,000 species of plants and animals are threatened in the Atlantic Forest. #riodejaneiro #brasil #biodiversity #mataatlantica #mattiasklum #protectbiodiversity #wwf #sustainability #ecology @natgeo @thephotosociety @mattiasklumcollection @irisalexandrov
Summer night at Övre Hillen, Dalarna, Sweden. This summer I enjoy working on the long and exciting project @vattenresan in collaboration with #svensktvatten.
