At the end of 2016, I traveled with writer Jessica Benko for UNDP @undp to document stories of survivors of violent extremism across Sub-Saharan Africa. The United Nations Development Programme estimates that more than 33,300 Africans have lost their lives to violent extremism during 2011 to March 2016, and millions have seen their livelihoods affected through displacement. Together we created the book โ€˜Survivorsโ€™ that captures the stories of 36 survivors in Uganda, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Nigeria and Ivory Coast. The images will be on display in front of the National Parliament in Copenhagen on Wednesday next week, and the photo book will be launched at Fotografiska in Stockholm on the same day. The project will also be on display at Photoville in Brooklyn, New York. Please come by if you find yourself in any of these three places! #SurvivorsofExtremism

A little girl playing in a tree on the island of Tarawa, Kiribati. This image is from my project Vanishing Nation about the Island nation Kiribati ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ฎ, a once isolated society that now are trying to figure out how to adapt to the new problem of climate change while continuing to grapple with globalization, both of which are transforming the way of life and culture across the region. I spent about a month on the Island and fell in love the people and culture, and this project brought me back to photography after taking a hiatus. #kiribati #southpacific #climatechange
When I started in photography a decade ago, I felt a bit like an alien in this industry, and honestly a bit taken aback from that people seam to want talk more about my hair than my work. Not that I am complaining (because there are bigger issues in this world) and maybe some of that just comes with the territory of being different or looking different. Regardless I am happy to see the industry slowly changing, and so very happy to not be the only one anymore! With my photo ladies @yagazieemezi @whitney_rich #femalephotographer #ghana #itsjusthair

Happy birthday to Malala @malalafund Malala spent her birthday in Iraq sharing cotton candy and riding the ferris wheel with girls forced out of school by violence in Mosul and other towns. She arrived just as the government declared victory in Mosul. โ€œFighting in the streets may be over, but our fight for girls continues,โ€ she says. #idps #iraq #malaladay
