“I don’t want to be known as the girl who was shot by the Taliban. I want to be a girl who struggled for her rights,” says Malala Yousafzai ( @malalafund), an activist for girls’ education and the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. After she survived an assassination attempt in 2012 on her way home from school in Pakistan, Malala went on to co-found the Malala Fund and travels the world in support of girls’ rights. “I know that my story has encouraged other girls to fight for their own education,” says Malala. “They inspire me to keep working every day.” Malala, who turns 20 today, is spending her birthday in northern Iraq, visiting with girls who are refugees and internally displaced people. “In their young lives, they have all suffered horrible violence, fear and barriers to their education,” says Malala. “There is no overnight solution to girls’ education.
