Haven't touched a bottle of the Mouton 2002 since I got it en primeur. I thought it was time to pop one to see how it evolved. The critics are not very convinced of this wine, boy were they wrong! I decanted the wine for around an hour and it was singing like a rock star. The nose has blackberries, cassis, black cherries, pencil shavings, tobacco and some cedar wood. It is full bodied with great concentration. The tannins are almost fully integrated, there's a beautiful velvety texture to the wine. This is a blockbuster, classic Pauillac at its best. Mouton has managed to make an amazing wine in a weak vintage. At this stage, the 2002 is superior to the 2003.
Have you tried Amour de Deutz? Deutz has its roots in Aÿ-Champagne village. The house was founded in 1838 by two Prussian immigrants, William Deutz and Pierre-Hubert Geldermann, both wine merchants from Aix-La Chapelle. Convinced that a fine vineyard was the key element for producing great wines, they started buying top quality plots to produce Champagne. And thanks to their good relations created a strong demand for the Champagne in England and Germany. In fact, throughout its early history Deutz was one of the most popular Champagagne Brands in the UK. Today the house is run by Jean Lallier, sixth generation descendant of founder William Deutz.
