Let's talk skull fractures, in particular basilar skull fractures.
The second photo shows base of skull fractures at autopsy. These types of fractures can be caused by trauma. These fractures are not very common, but they show 2 distinct features: Raccoon eyes or periorbital ecchymoses and Battle's sign or bruising of the mastoid process. These signs either seen in a patient in the hospital or on external exam at autopsy can indicate a basilar skull fracture. The first photo shows a bruise behind the ear which is called Battle's sign. The second photo shows raccoon eyes. These are both caused by the base of skull fracture bleeding into surround soft tissues. Depending on the severity of this type of fracture the patient can live, although it is also common to result in death.
