120 Sided Fair Dice: mathematically this die has the maximum possible number of sides with equal area. Two mathematicians, Robert Fathauer and Henry Segerman, realized that oddly named regular polyhedron (disdyakis triacontahedron) had the needed geometry to make a 120 sided fair die. Like the familiar 6 sided die, the d120 has the following properties: every side must have equal area and the numbers on parallel sides (top and bottom) must sum to the same number. 24 JUN: A grieving father has cycled more than a thousand miles to hear his deceased daughter’s heartbeat. Bill Conner shed tears while using a stethoscope to hear the heart of his organ donor daughter beating inside Loumonth Jack's chest. Mr Jack had been told he had just days to live after suffering a heart attack. Mr Conner said: "Knowing he's alive because of Abbey, Abbey is alive inside of him - it's her heart having him stand up straight”. Abbey was found unconscious in a swimming pool in January while on holiday. She was kept her on life support until doctors could use her organs for transplants. Mr Conner said that Abbey made the decision to be an organ donor when aged only 16. We're working to understand why up to 10 million jets of solar material burst from the sun’s surface at any moment. Called spicules, they can erupt as fast as 60 miles per second and reach lengths of 6,000 miles before collapsing. Now, for the first time, a computer simulation — so detailed it took a full year to run — shows how spicules form, helping scientists understand how they break free of the sun’s surface and surge upward so quickly. Observing spicules has been a thorny problem for scientists, because spicules are transient, forming and collapsing over the course of just five to 10 minutes. These tenuous structures are also difficult to study from Earth, where the atmosphere often blurs our telescopes’ vision. This work relied upon high-cadence observations from our Interface Region Imaging Spectrogragh, or IRIS, and the Swedish 1-meter Solar Telescope in La Palma, in the Canary Islands. Together, the spacecraft and telescope peer into the lower layers of the sun’s atmosphere, known as the interface region, where spicules form.
