Perú has the second-largest portion of the Amazon rainforest after the Brazilian Amazon. Photo by @devlin_gandy // Three mountaineers make their way up Mount Shasta's Avalanche Gulch. Towering at 14,180 ft (4322m), the mountain rises some 8,000 ft (2438m) from its base. With no limit on hikers, and exceptional skiing opportunities, its arguably California's most popular 14er. This year California has been blessed with a wet winter, and the spring conditions on the mountain are near ideal, making it a perfect time for an adventure.
22 MAY: The International Dwarf Fashion Show happened in Dubai on 20 May, with models under four feet tall taking to the runway. The show was launched in 2014 and has taken place in New York, Paris and Japan Fashion Week so far. The show aims to ‘reverse the discriminatory diktats of beauty’ and the organiser says she was inspired to set up the fashion show after seeing women with dwarfism face problems when shopping for clothing. #Beauty #Fashion #Dubai #DubaiFashion #DubaiFashionWeek #Dwarfism #BBCShorts #BBCNews @bbcnews
Close Encounter | Photograph by Matthew Smith ( @mattysmithphoto) . Your Shot photographer Matthew Smith photographed this stunning close-up of a newly hatched hawksbill turtle in the Bismarck Sea. He said, "Elders in the villages of Northern Papua New Guinea told me of the sad decline in numbers of these turtles, noticeable in their lifetime. A small project has been set up there on the island of Lissenung to educate locals about the vulnerability of these animals and to protect nests from poachers." -- Today we’re featuring @natgeoyourshot photographs selected for @natgeo April’s “Photo of the Day.” To see more, go to natgeo.com/pod. #YourShotPhotographer

Video by @tobyharriman // Flying by Knik Glacier was incredible. That black dirt covering the glacier is known as cryoconite, which is very fine textured dust made of a combination of small rock particles, soot and bacteria. Over time, the accumulation of cryoconite has caused a phenomenon scientists call “biological darkening.” As the powdery dust built up on snow, glaciers and icecaps, it got buried within the ice. However in a self-accelerating process, as more cryoconite is exposed, it further increases the rate of melting and therefore the visual darkening of the glacier. Photo by @petekmuller. Dr. Steve Boyes stands for a portrait at the end of a tough day of expedition down the #Cubango River in Angola. Steve is a conservation #biologist and ornithologist who oversees the Okavango Wilderness Project, a National Geographic-supported initiative to protect the pristine Okavango Delta in Botswana. Steve has studied the Okvango ecosystem for more than 15 years and is deeply committed to its preservation. I've joined Steve and his team as they commence their latest MegaTransect which covers over 1000 kilometers of the #Cubango River, a main tributary into the Okavango Delta. Each day the team navigates the river in mekoros, a type of traditional dug out canoe commonly used in the Delta. They take water samples, note bird and wildlife species and collect other data regarding the river's ecosystem. Steve is undoubtedly one of the brightest and most driven people I've ever encountered. Never Stop Exploring | Photograph by Katie G. . “My son recently had his 4th birthday, and we gave him a telescope as one of his gifts,” writes #YourShotPhotographer Katie G. “Our dear son is on the autism spectrum, and we try to find ways to spark his curiosity and learning about the world around him. I particularly enjoy this shot and will treasure it for years to come because of the subtle smirk on his face as he peers in to the telescope. We hope he never stops exploring the world around him.” -- “Your photo makes me want to buy a telescope for my niece and nephew, so I can see them have a smile like the one your son has in this photo. I love your caption; you really make me care. I feel your son’s excitement — and like you, I hope my niece and nephew 'never stop exploring the world around [them].'” — @natgeoyourshot Producer David Y. Lee ( @davidylee) . This photo was submitted to our “A Spark of Genius” assignment, curated by Your Shot Producer Matt Adams ( @themattadams). 22 MAY: A potholer descends on a winch into Gaping Gill, the largest cavern in Britain, as Fell Beck stream falls into the cavern creating Britain’s highest unbroken waterfall. The cavern is only open to the public two weekends a year, allowing people to be winched from a hole in the roof and up again. Gaping Gill pothole has a network of tunnels at the bottom of a large crater on the limestone moors near Ingleborough. The main shaft is about 365 feet (111m) deep, large enough to contain the nave of York Minister. The cave system's entrances are on open moorland and exploration of the chamber is usually only available to experienced potholers. Sometimes, the best views are the ones behind you. This happens so much when I am taking pictures. I'll setup in a place for sunset where I am sure the light and scene is gonna produce a spectacular image, and before I know it I am fully shooting in a different direction. In this case, it was the La Sal mountains behind me that caught my attention while I was trying to get a shot of the crazy rock formations in the needles district of Canyonlands NP. It's a good reminder to never get too focused on one thing and be open to changing up your whole game plan at the last minute. Follow the light! Photo by @andywcoleman // How can you get one of the most beautiful views in Yosemite National Park all to yourself - go at midnight. We were heading back to the South Gate of the park after photographing the lunar rainbow and stopped here for a few minutes to enjoy this vista in total solitude. Earlier in the day, this area was so full, we couldn't even find parking. The full moon came out from the clouds long enough to light up the valley and the walls of El Capitan. If you look closely, you can see two headlights of night climbers on the dark side of the cliffs. #FindYourPark
