All right, so it’s Day 2 of the Halloween-themed takeover and things are definitely getting interesting, because I’ll be talking about the first pages of a bunch of short story collections by Roald Dahl, aka the genius mind behind some of our favourite childhood stories like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Witches and James and the Giant Peach (my personal favourite)! Without further ado, here are the summaries!
Trickery (The Wish); Compelling first page about a little boy’s innate desire to pick his scab, which turns out to be perfectly healed even though it should be fresh and still incredibly painful. Why is that?..
Creepy Rating; 💀💀💀1/2
Innocence (Papa and Mama); Opens with creepy old pictures, then a narrator telling us about the strange age gaps between his Father and his Grandfather and then a tale of breaking bones.
Creepy Rating; 💀💀💀💀
Fear (W.S.); A writer receiving letters from fans that he don’t know, some are kind and warm, some are not. Not immediately creepy but very promising..
Creepy Rating; 💀💀
War (The Voyage Out); Narrator recounting the time when he was lost out at sea for two weeks, right before fighting a war, which is pretty frightening in and of itself.
Creepy Rating; 💀💀1/2
So yeah, really it’s no surprise that Innocence is the creepiest so far, any story that starts off with old black and white pictures of children is automatically creepy. That’s it for today though, which one sounded the most interesting or the most creepy to you? Are you surprised to hear that Roald Dahl also wrote adult stories, and that some of them are hella creepy? Hahah
Anywho I shall see you guys tomorrow, peace!
